After
WWII Smoky Hill AFB became the home of B47 Jet Bombers after
the B29 was phased out. The runway was lengthened, widened
and reinforced to accommodate B52s and tankers.
It was renamed Schilling AFB and became a SAC base. It was
deactivated in 1964 and became the Salina Municipal Airport.
Two hangars, the Officers’ and Enlisted Men’s
Club buildings, and the non operational control tower are
all that remain of the B29 presence. |
