Frederick I “Bud” Shaffer, Jr, He was born Dec 21, 1922 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He attended Hutchinson High School and Kansas University, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

On March 5, 1946, he married June Lowrey. They have four sons, Rick, Ron, Tim and John and eight grandchildren.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson, Ks. He received the Kansas Distinguished Parks Commission Member award; served on the Hutchinson Recreation Commission for 30 years; the Recreate for Life Foundation; Shadduck Park Community Center, Elmdale Community Center, Rice Park, Sand Hills State Park, the Wellness Center, Keller Leisure Arts Center; he earned the Silver Beaver Award after his leadership in the Boy Scouts for 25 years; he received the “Take Pride in America,”; “Bob Arntz” award. This national award is the only non-professional award given to volunteers. He also received the “Pioneer” awards.

Bud originated and founded the Dillon Nature Center and the Living Land Foundation.

He served on the Board of Hutchinson Community College, the Cosmosphere and Space Center Board; several Savings and Loan boards. He was treasurer for the Reno County Democratic Party.

Bud loved sports. He was an avid tennis player, golfer, runner, badminton player, and basketball player. If you needed to know where Bud was, just look for the bouncing ball sound.

He was chairman of the Kansas State Park Authority and a member of the Cultural Exchange in Russia on leisure time affairs. He served in the Army Air Corps, on the NJCAA board, which brought the National Junior College Basketball Finals Tournament to Hutchinson; the American Legion, and an associate member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

Frederick I “Bud” Shaffer, Jr. passed away October 16, 2002 at his home in Fountain Hills, AZ. He is survived by his wife and sons and their families, two sisters, Martha Chabin and Adela (Sissy) Bowden in addition to many nieces and nephews. Services were held October 21, 2002 at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.
