The New 20th Air Force

The new 20th Air Force was reactivated at Vandenberg AFB, California on September 4, 1991. Originally they were part of the Strategic Air Command. On June 1, 1992 SAC was deactivated and they became part of the Air Combat Command responsible for providing on-alert Missiles forces for the new United States Strategic Command. Lt. General "Dirk" Jameson became it's first commander. On July 1, 1993 they became part of the Air Force Space Command, which is headquarted at Peterson AFB, Colorado.

The present headquarters of the new 20th Air Force is F. E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Major General Timothy J. McMahon is the present Commander. The new 20th is composed of three wings, the 90th Space Wing at F.E. Warren AFB, the 91st Space Wing at Minot AFB, ND and the 341st Space Wing at Malmstrom AFB, Montana.

Deep underground in five western states (Colo., Mont., Neb., N.D. and Wyo.) are missile launch control centers. Operated 24 hours a day by a two officer missile combat crew, they monitor the status of the missiles and are directly responsible to the President.
