L to R: Major John Miranda, A/C P-13; Cmdr Hiram Cassidy, CO, USS Pintado; and Col. George Mundy, CO, 39th Bomb Group

Both Col. Mundy and Capt. Miranda later received Silver Stars - the nation's fifth highest decoration - for their laudable efforts in leading the attack and directing the successful bailing out of the crew.

Capt Bob Spaulding was awarded a second Distinguished Flying Cross for the part he played in dropping out of formation to cover the stricken crew and for guiding them to the rescue submarine.

Many of the survivors, reportedly, never flew again. However a Second Crew 13 was formed and flew to finish out the war.

The name of Replacement Crew 13's aircraft was "USS Pintado" - a fitting tribute to the crew that rescue submarine.
